Karwa Chauth is one of the most sacred Hindu festivals celebrated by married women across India. On this day, women observe a strict fast from sunrise to moonrise for the long life, health, and prosperity of their husbands.

This festival symbolizes love, devotion, and marital harmony. In 2025, Karwa Chauth will be celebrated on Friday, October 10, 2025.

It is not just a ritual but a celebration of trust, faith, and emotional bonding between husband and wife.

History and Significance of Karwa Chauth

The word “Karwa” refers to an earthen pot used during the puja, and “Chauth” means the fourth day after the full moon in the Hindu month of Kartik.

Karwa Chauth marks the time when married women pray for the long life and prosperity of their husbands. In ancient times, it also symbolized sisterhood and unity, as newly married women would bond with other married women in their community.

Fasting on this day is believed to bring happiness, peace, and blessings to married life.

Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha

Rituals and Traditions of Karwa Chauth

1. Sargi (Pre-Dawn Meal)

Before sunrise, women eat a special meal called Sargi, prepared by their mothers-in-law. It includes fruits, dry fruits, sweets, parathas, and coconut water to give them energy throughout the day.

2. Nirjala Fasting

After eating Sargi, women start their fast and refrain from eating or drinking anything, even water, until moonrise. Throughout the day, they pray, sing bhajans, and prepare for the evening puja.

3. Karwa Chauth Puja Vidhi

In the evening, women dress in traditional attire, often red or maroon sarees, and gather for Karwa Chauth Puja. They decorate their thalis, light diyas, apply kumkum, and listen to the Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha together.

During the puja, offerings such as rice, sindoor, flowers, and water-filled Karwa pots are made to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva.

4. Moonrise Ceremony

Once the moon is visible, women look at it through a sieve, offer water (arghya), and then look at their husbands through the same sieve. The fast is broken after the husband offers his wife water and something sweet to eat.

Modern-Day Celebrations

Today, while the essence of Karwa Chauth remains rooted in tradition, its celebration has become more festive and modern.

Women dress in elegant ethnic wear, exchange gifts, apply mehndi, and share their celebrations on social media. Many families host group pujas and dinner gatherings after moonrise.

Unmarried girls also observe the fast to pray for a good husband and a blessed married life.

Karwa Chauth has thus evolved into a celebration of mutual love, respect, and trust between couples.

Karwa Chauth for Unmarried Girls

Unmarried girls can also perform Karwa Chauth to seek blessings for a suitable life partner.

They wake up early, eat Sargi, observe the fast all day, participate in the evening puja, and break their fast after seeing the moon. They pray to Goddess Parvati for a happy and prosperous future married life.
